Utah State Fair 2009

Last Sunday I dragged Michael to the State Fair -- or rather I eagerly suggested it weeks prior and on the day of, he dragged me out to SLC. I hate to admit it, but I'm one of those people who gets really excited about something and then I try and back out on the day of... I'm that kind of lazy.

The best part about going to the fair? Pretending that all of the calories that you consume don't count. Cotton Candy? Funnel Cake? Soda? Beer? Yes please!

(He hates when I take his picture -- he thinks he's discouraging me when he makes faces like this -- he's wrong.)

The worst part, well, the two worst parts? All of the people. I swear it's like the worst of the worst come out for a night at the fair. I felt kind of dirty just being there. And all of the animals. I love the animals, but they all look so damn sad that it's kind of depressing. I know that Michael thinks that I'm ridiculous, that they don't know anything different and that's what they're breed for, but I can't help it.

I've always loved wandering the halls filled with arts and home crafts: quilts, cakes, paintings... that's what I'm drawn to. Poor Michael finds it all incredibly boring, but he was nice enough to let me drag him through numerous buildings filled with the work of local artists. It's too bad they don't let you take pictures in the halls... I did however get my picture taken with this awesome pumkin-spider outside of one of the craft halls:

How cool would that be in your yard?

Moving... err... Moved.

Yes folks, it's true -- we finally have a place of our own.

We looked at it on the 31st, signed the lease on the 3rd, got the keys on the 4th, and officially moved all of our stuff in on the 7th. Looking at the calendar, I know that it went by quick, but it felt like an eternity of waiting.

It's a 700 sq ft one bedroom apartment in Orem. It's an older 8-plex, so it's by no means anything fancy, but it's ours.

Moving day was exhausting! It’s only the second time I’ve ever moved and it would be nice to never do it again. It goes without saying that moving sucks. We were up until 4am the night before getting things packed and then back up at 8:30am to get started. Michael's brothers (Jared, Bryant, Richard, and Robert) came over at nine to help load things into the truck that his brother Bryant borrowed from work. His Dad even showed up with some bagels for us to devour. Overall I think that things went relatively quick & easy. We we’re done unloading everything at the new apartment by 11:30am – 2 ½ hours total? I think that’s pretty good.

It’s just funny how you don’t think you have that much stuff until you start going through all the cabinets, closets, and crevices trying to put it all in boxes. We ended up with one giant truck load and more than five car loads full of stuff. That seems like a lot of crap for two people who have basically been living out of their bedroom.

We spent the day unpacking, organizing, connecting wires, and sweating like crazy (thanks to the 100 degree heat and our swamp being broken)… I’d say that we’re about 75% unpacked already… it’s the little stuff that we still need to find homes for. I need to re-alphabetize my books & movies, decide where all of my craft stuff is going, find places for Michael’s action figures, etc, etc. It’ll be nice to not trip over boxes and have a place for everything.

Our last trip to the old apartment involved transporting our precious fluff balls. Hearing their concerned cries from the backseat while we drove to our new home was heartbreaking. Poor things we’re so confused when we let them out at the new place. Actually, the kittens we’re kind of excited, but poor Oliver was practically terrified. He wouldn’t even get out of the box at first. Once he did, he proceeded directly to the closet and hid under all of my clothes. He would occasionally poke his head out to make eye contact with us and cry some more – he’s always been a wimp, but I was pretty sad to see him so upset.

That being said, those cats kept us up All. Night. Long. I swear they woke us up every 15 minutes from 11:30pm until 6:30am. If this kind of sleep deprivation is anything like having kids – I think I’d like to get sterilized asap.

Anyway…

Today Michael has the task of calling our landlord about getting a few things fixed: our swamp cooler, screens for our windows, and our bedroom blinds. I'm sure there will be other things, but those are the biggies that we've noticed so far. I’ll probably spend the day alphabetizing and begging Michael to take me to Ikea - A typical day for me.

I promised to try and post some before and after pictures very soon. It may take me awhile to get those “after” photos though, so try and be patient.
